Botox / Neuromodulator Aftercare

Guidance for the first day after Botox or neuromodulator injections, including upright time, skin care, activity, and urgent neurologic warning signs.

Contact the clinical team promptly. For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, use local emergency services or the nearest appropriate emergency department. This website is not monitored as an emergency service.

Start here

  • Use these instructions as general guidance only. If your surgeon or clinic team gave you different instructions, follow the clinic instructions.
  • Keep your follow-up appointment even if you feel well. Early review helps the clinic notice small issues before they become larger problems.

What is usually normal

  • Small bumps, pinpoint bleeding, mild redness, tenderness, or a mild headache can happen and often settles quickly.
  • The effect is not immediate. It usually begins over several days and settles around two weeks.

First day care

  • Remain upright for the period your injector recommends, commonly about 3 to 4 hours.
  • Do not rub, press, massage, or manipulate the treated areas on the first day unless you were specifically instructed to.
  • Clean the skin gently. Avoid facials, facial massage, tight hats or headbands over the area, and heavy heat the same day.

Activity

  • Normal facial expression is fine. Avoid intense exercise and heavy sweating until the clinic says it is safe.
  • Avoid alcohol the same day if bruising is a concern or if the clinic advised you to avoid it.

Call urgently or seek emergency care

  • Trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing after botulinum toxin treatment needs immediate medical care.
  • Call for new generalized weakness, severe dizziness, double vision, drooping that affects vision, or loss of bladder control.
  • Seek urgent care for hives, swelling of lips or throat, wheezing, or a severe allergic reaction.

Emergency signs

  • Seek emergency care now for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe uncontrolled bleeding, or a fast irregular heartbeat.
  • Seek urgent care for new one-sided calf swelling, warmth, redness, or cramping, especially after body or breast surgery.
  • After eye surgery or facial fillers, sudden vision change, severe eye pain, or stroke-like symptoms should be treated as an emergency.
