Breast Augmentation Recovery
Guidance for support garments, incision care, arm movement, walking, implant-related warning signs, and urgent review after breast augmentation.
If something feels urgent, do not wait on this website.
Contact the clinical team promptly. For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, use local emergency services or the nearest appropriate emergency department. This website is not monitored as an emergency service.
These are general instructions. Follow the written and verbal plan given for your own operation when it differs.
Start here
- Use these instructions as general guidance only. If your surgeon or clinic team gave you different instructions, follow the clinic instructions.
- Keep your follow-up appointment even if you feel well. Early review helps the clinic notice small issues before they become larger problems.
What is usually normal
- Chest tightness, pressure, soreness, swelling, bruising, and tiredness are common during the first days.
- One side may feel tighter or sit higher while swelling changes, but sudden major asymmetry is not something to ignore.
Support garment
- Wear the surgical bra or support garment exactly as directed. It should support without digging into the skin or incisions.
- Avoid underwire bras, tight fashion bras, and sleeping on your stomach until the clinic clears you.
Incision care and showering
- Keep dressings, glue, or strips in place unless the clinic says to remove them.
- Shower only when cleared. Avoid baths, pools, hot tubs, and soaking the incisions until healed.
Movement and activity
- Walk gently from the first day if you are steady. This helps circulation and reduces clot risk.
- Avoid heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, intense exercise, and raising the arms above the head until cleared.
Call the clinic urgently
- Call right away if one breast suddenly becomes much larger, tighter, more painful, or more bruised than the other.
- Call for fever, chills, spreading redness, pus, bad-smelling drainage, wound opening, or implant exposure.
- Call urgently for calf pain or swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath, rash with swelling, or severe uncontrolled pain.
Emergency signs
- Seek emergency care now for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe uncontrolled bleeding, or a fast irregular heartbeat.
- Seek urgent care for new one-sided calf swelling, warmth, redness, or cramping, especially after body or breast surgery.
- After eye surgery or facial fillers, sudden vision change, severe eye pain, or stroke-like symptoms should be treated as an emergency.
