Liposuction Recovery

Guidance for drainage, compression garments, showering, walking, swelling, activity, and urgent clot or skin warning signs after liposuction.

Start here

  • Use these instructions as general guidance only. If your surgeon or clinic team gave you different instructions, follow the clinic instructions.
  • Keep your follow-up appointment even if you feel well. Early review helps the clinic notice small issues before they become larger problems.

What is usually normal

  • Fluid drainage from small access sites can happen during the first 24 to 72 hours, especially with tumescent liposuction.
  • Swelling, bruising, soreness, firmness, numbness, and uneven early texture are common while tissues settle.

Compression garment

  • Wear compression exactly as directed. It should be smooth and supportive, not folded, digging, or causing numbness.
  • Remove it only when allowed for hygiene or laundering. Put it back on carefully without twisting the skin.

Hygiene and wound care

  • Use absorbent pads as instructed for early drainage. Change them with clean hands.
  • Shower when cleared, often with gentle soap and water only. Avoid baths, pools, hot tubs, and soaking until healed.

Activity

  • Gentle walking is encouraged early and often. Avoid staying in bed all day unless your surgeon specifically told you to.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, high-impact exercise, saunas, and intense heat until cleared.

Call the clinic urgently

  • Call for dizziness, fainting, very fast heartbeat, severe weakness, or bleeding that soaks pads quickly.
  • Call if the garment causes numbness, blue or very pale skin, deep grooves, increasing pain, or new blisters.
  • Call for fever, chills, pus, bad odor, spreading redness, a new fluid bulge, calf pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.

Emergency signs

  • Seek emergency care now for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe uncontrolled bleeding, or a fast irregular heartbeat.
  • Seek urgent care for new one-sided calf swelling, warmth, redness, or cramping, especially after body or breast surgery.
  • After eye surgery or facial fillers, sudden vision change, severe eye pain, or stroke-like symptoms should be treated as an emergency.
