Breast Lift Recovery

Guidance for support bras, incision care, sleeping position, arm movement, nipple and skin warning signs, and urgent review after breast lift.

If something feels urgent, do not wait on this website.

Contact the clinical team promptly. For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, use local emergency services or the nearest appropriate emergency department. This website is not monitored as an emergency service.

These are general instructions. Follow the written and verbal plan given for your own operation when it differs.

All procedures

Start here

  • Use these instructions as general guidance only. If your surgeon or clinic team gave you different instructions, follow the clinic instructions.
  • Keep your follow-up appointment even if you feel well. Early review helps the clinic notice small issues before they become larger problems.

What is usually normal

  • Bruising, swelling, breast firmness, itching around incisions, numbness, and changes in nipple sensation are common early.
  • Incisions may look red or pink for months. Shape and softness usually settle gradually.

Support garment

  • Wear the surgical bra exactly as instructed, often day and night at first. It should be snug, not painful.
  • Avoid underwire and tight pressure over incision lines until the clinic clears you.

Incision care and showering

  • Follow the clinic timing for dressing changes, drain care if used, and showering.
  • Keep strips or glue in place until they loosen on their own or are removed in clinic.

Sleeping and activity

  • Sleep on your back with the upper body slightly elevated during the early recovery period.
  • Avoid lifting, pushing, pulling, housework that strains the chest, and raising arms above shoulder level until cleared.

Call the clinic urgently

  • Call right away if a nipple or skin edge becomes dark, very pale, blistered, cold, or increasingly painful.
  • Call for one breast suddenly becoming much larger, tighter, or more painful, or for bleeding that soaks dressings.
  • Call for fever, pus, spreading redness, wound opening, calf pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.

Emergency signs

  • Seek emergency care now for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe uncontrolled bleeding, or a fast irregular heartbeat.
  • Seek urgent care for new one-sided calf swelling, warmth, redness, or cramping, especially after body or breast surgery.
  • After eye surgery or facial fillers, sudden vision change, severe eye pain, or stroke-like symptoms should be treated as an emergency.
